Who should take the IELTS?

  • Non-native English speakers who already hold a college degree from another country.
  • Non-native English speakers with at least two years of higher-level English instruction.
  • 11th Grade students preparing to apply to U.S. colleges and Universities.
  • Students transferring to a U.S. college or university from another country.

What does the IELTS exam entail?

IELTS has four parts: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing portions of the test are done in one sitting. The Speaking test may be taken on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.

What should I know for each section of the IELTS exam?

  • The Listening Section tests your English comprehension through audio recordings that feature speakers with different accents. After listening to therecordings, you then answer questions about what you heard.
  • The Reading Section tests your English comprehension through three written passages from different kinds of publications, such as newpapers, magazines and academic textbooks.  After reading these passages, you must then answer questions that test your understanding.
  • The Speaking Section tests English speaking ability in three scenarios. The first is a general interview in which you will be asked questions about yourself, much like an interview. The second section will require you to speak in depth about a subject familiar to you and the last will test your ability to maintain a conversation through more abstract questions.
  • The Writing Section tests your English language skills by requiring you to write two essays. The first essay is based on your interpretation of a diagram or chart, and the second is a written response to a question or statement.
