Meeting the Needs of constituents

Posted by: Director @ 11:05 am

There is popular web-based comic entitled xkcd that has developed quite a following.  The comic, which relies solely on stick figures, bills itself as A Webcomic of Romance, Sarcasm, Math, and Language.  A recent posting on the site has garnered a significant amount of attention in the world of higher education and on this Friday, I figured I would share it with our readers.

The simple Venn Diagram used in this comic makes a significant statement.  Without communication, those providing services often miss the mark.  What is provided doesn’t always match that which is being looked for.  When it comes to education, whether formal classroom, group work, or tutoring, it is important to make sure that everyone is on the same page.  As providers of tutoring and other educational services, we want to make sure we are meeting the needs of our constituents.  We welcome feedback from our clients. Let us know if we are meeting your needs, or let us know how we can improve.

Stability: An essential component of successful tutoring

Posted by: Director @ 11:06 am

We often take stability for granted.  It’s something that we don’t think about and simply assume it will be there, but when it comes to tutoring stability is absolutely essential.  Tutoring works.  Okay, let me rephrase.  Tutoring works when the circumstances surrounding it match your expectations and goals.  No matter if looking to get ahead, simply maintain a grade, or working to catch-up, tutoring stability is important and needed.  A consistent, stable schedule allows for academic progress.

When setting up your schedule with your tutor, make sure that you can meet at least 2 times a week and that those days are consistent.  These are needed to develop the foundation of stability in the tutorial.   As we near the beginning of the new school year, and you begin to set up your tutoring schedule.  Just remember to set the foundation with Stability right now.  It will result in A’s at the end of the semester.

How do you explain the taste of bubble-gum

Posted by: Director @ 12:51 pm

Yesterday I went next door to the convenience store to get a bottle of water.  While in the queue, a bright pink package of Extra Classic Bubble Gum caught my eye.  I once possessed a chewing gum habit that my dentist did not agree with, and therefore eliminated the habit some time ago.  However, on this particular day I could not resist. and added the gum to my purchase.  I must admit, that first piece was satisfying, and as I closed the package I noticed the following saying playfully written inside the packaging.  Its color matched that of the pink packaging and said,

TRY EXPLAINING THE TASTE OF BUBBLE GUM TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER TASTED IT.

This prompted me to think about how you would go about doing that.  This question has crossed my mind before, but in a different context.  For example, I always wondered how you would explain the taste of an artichoke to someone who had never had artichoke, but bubble gum, I was puzzled. So where am I going with this?

I think this same idea can be applied to tutoring.  Those who have worked with a tutor fully understand the how helpful and beneficial it can be, but how do you explain this to someone who has never needed, or chosen to work with a tutor?  It is difficult.  So, if someone were to ask you, “What is like to work with a tutor? “ Could you answer the question?  Tutoring, like bubble gum, is something that everyone should experience at least one time in their life.
